Luckily, the driver of the truck, David Laverty, 50 years old, was not injured during the crash accident. The person driving the vehicle was identified as Bailey Goodman and according to accounts of the witnesses, it appears that the SUV had been attempting already for some minutes to pass the van, which was running for approximately 40 miles an hour only. When the SUV started passing the van, it appeared that the van speeded up since it was apparent that the SUV had taken a long time being behind the van before it attempted to pass by it. David Paddock, principal of the Fairport High School declared that four of the girls who were killed during the crash were Sarah Monnat, Meredith McLure, Hannah Congdon, and Bailey Goodman. They have been members of the high school's cheerleading squad. The fifth teen ager was identified by Paddock as Katherine "Katie" Shirley. All of these five girls graduated high school on Thursday, five days before the accident that took their lives.
Goodman and McLure are both 17 years old in the time of their deaths. Meanwhile, Congdon, Monnat and Shirley were all 18 years old.
It was early Wednesday when Paddock sent e-mail messages to the parents of Fairport High Schools' recently graduated batch and other parents. The e-mail expressed sorrow for the tragic loss of five of their school's graduates just a few hours ago.
Right after the spread of the information about the accident, dozens of parents along with the students and teachers gathered atop a hillside, which overlooks the Fairport High School in grief. Some were hugging each other and weeping. The mourning site was in a an Erie Canal village located about 10 miles from Rochester on the southeast side.
